Philips to buy Genlyte for $2.7 billion
The deal will make Philips, which is based in Amsterdam, the biggest lighting company in North America. Gerard Kleisterlee, the Philips chief executive, is using proceeds from selling the semiconductor holdings to bolster the Philips medical and lighting divisions and return cash to shareholders. Genlyte will help the company increase sales of systems using high-power light-emitting diodes, or LEDs.
